Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Degrees Offered:

  • Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering
  • Master of Science in Civil Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering Discipline Overviews:

Civil Engineering involves the study of engineering principles and the application of scientific knowledge and technology for the betterment of humankind. Civil Engineers study structures and their foundations and invent safer, more economical ways of construction. Their work helps solve many of our planet's most serious problems -- foul air; decaying cities, roadways and bridges; clogged airports and highways; polluted streams, rivers, lakes, and hazardous wastes.

Environmental Engineering focuses on protecting and preserving human health and the environment by applying engineering and scientific principles. Environmental Engineers design and provide facilities for the treatment of municipal and industrial wastes, construct and operate systems that purify water, and develop models for the removal of contaminants from the environment. The Environmental Engineering curriculum prepares students for the responsible management of natural resources. The Civil Engineering department administers this program.
